It was founded Oct. 2, 1992 by Joy and Aaron Shabazz, two persons with significant disabilities. In memorial to its cofounder Joy, the Center is now officially named the Joy A. Shabazz Center for Independent Living. Original members of the Board of Directors included Joy and Aaron Shabazz and James Wells.
